Scratching is not a bad habit: it is your cat’s way of grooming its claws, stretching, and marking its territory. If it has a good scratching post, it will leave the sofa alone.

• Wall-mounted shelves and scratchers, to make the most of vertical space.
• Scratching tunnels for playing and resting.

How to choose the right one: the scratcher should be taller than your cat when fully stretched and very stable, so it does not wobble while scratching. Place it near where the cat sleeps or by the entrance to your home, which is where it likes to mark the most. If you have several cats, a large tree or several scratchers are best.
