Hamsters have a reputation for being easy pets, and in part they are: you don't have to take them for walks or bathe them. But almost everything needed for them to live peacefully revolves around their home, and that is where most people go wrong. Here are the four key points.
1. More space than you think
A hamster travels several kilometers each night in the wild. At home, it needs room to run, explore, and hide. Veterinary recommendations in Europe suggest a floor surface area of at least 100 × 50 cm, and many cages sold as "for hamsters" fall far short of this.
Floor space matters more than height: wider is better than taller. Levels and tubes are a fun extra, but they do not replace horizontal space. If you are choosing one, take a look at our cages and accessories for small pets.
2. A wheel that doesn't bend its back
The wheel is essential, but a small wheel forces them to run with their back arched upward, and in the long run, this causes injury.
- Syrian hamster: about 28–30 cm in diameter.
- Dwarf hamster: about 20–25 cm.
- Smooth surface, without bars, so their paws don't get caught.
The test is simple: watch it run. If the back remains straight, the wheel is good.
3. Space to burrow
In the wild, hamsters live in burrows. Digging calms them down. Put between 15 and 20 cm of bedding in at least one part of the cage so it can make tunnels.
Avoid cotton or fiber nests: they can get tangled in their paws or cause intestinal blockages if swallowed. Ink-free paper, hay, or wood shavings specifically for rodents are better.
4. Respect its schedule
The hamster is a nocturnal animal: it sleeps during the day and becomes active at dusk.
- Do not wake it up to play. A hamster awakened by force gets stressed and is more likely to bite.
- Place the cage away from direct sunlight and heating, and preferably outside the bedroom, because it makes noise at night.
One final tip
Add hiding spots, a bag or net of hay, and some chew toys, and change the layout from time to time so it has something new to explore. A hamster with space, a good wheel, and room to burrow is a calm hamster.
