Does your dog need a coat? How to tell and how to choose one

¿Tu perro necesita abrigo? Cómo saberlo y cómo elegirlo

When the cold weather arrives, the question arises: should I put a coat on my dog, or is it an exaggeration? It depends on the dog. Some truly need it, while others don't. Here is how to tell.

Dogs that do need it

  • Short or thin-haired breeds: Greyhounds, Podencos, Chihuahuas, Boxers, Pinschers, Pugs... They have little insulation against the cold.
  • Small dogs: They lose heat much faster than larger dogs and are closer to the cold, wet ground.
  • Puppies and senior dogs: They struggle more to regulate their temperature.
  • Very thin dogs, dogs that are ill, or those recovering from surgery.

Those that usually don't

Nordic breeds and those with double coats, such as Huskies, Samoyeds, German Shepherds, Goldens, or Bernese Mountain Dogs, are built for the cold. Putting a coat on them may cause them to overheat. In their case, at most, a light raincoat is useful on rainy days.

Signs your dog is cold

  • Shivering even when calm and still.
  • Lifting their paws or stopping in the middle of a walk.
  • Walking hunched over or with their tail tucked.
  • Curling into a ball at home and seeking out blankets, radiators, or your lap.

If you see these signs often, a coat will make their winter walks much more pleasant.

How to choose a functional coat

  • Cover the chest and back. This is where they lose the most heat. Coats that only cover the back provide little warmth.
  • The right fit. Measure the back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, and the chest girth at its widest point. If they are between sizes, choose the larger one.
  • No chafing. Neither in the armpits nor when walking. They should be able to move, sit, and relieve themselves normally.
  • Waterproof if it rains often where you live. A wet coat makes them colder than wearing nothing at all.
  • Easy to put on and wash. If it's a hassle to put on, you'll end up leaving it at home.

And inside the house, too?

Generally, no. Indoors, it is normal to take it off so they don't get too hot. The exception is for dogs that are very sensitive to the cold or seniors in cold houses, who might benefit from a light sweater.
