It's the most common question when buying a bed: what size should I get? A bed that is too short makes the dog end up sleeping on the floor, and one that is too big doesn't give them that feeling of having their own nook that many dogs look for. Measuring correctly takes two minutes.
Step 1: measure your dog while lying down
Wait until they are asleep or lying down in their usual position. With a soft measuring tape, measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail. Do not include the tail.
Step 2: add between 15 and 20 cm
This margin is what they need to turn around and get comfortable. The result is the length the long side of the bed should be.
Step 3: pay attention to how they sleep
- If they sleep curled up, you can stick to the lower end of the measurement. Beds with a rim are great for them because they can rest their head.
- If they sleep stretched out, go for the higher end or the next size up.
- If they are a puppy, think about the size they will be as an adult or assume you will change the bed later.
Guideline table
Every dog is different, so the measurement from step 2 takes precedence over this table. As a starting point:
- Cats and very small dogs (up to about 5 kg): 50 x 40 cm bed or Gloria Sweet 50 x 40.
- Small dogs (from 5 to 10 kg): 60 x 50 cm bed or Gloria Ametz 60 x 52.
- Medium dogs (from 10 to 20 kg): 70 x 60 cm bed.
- Large dogs that sleep stretched out: Gloria Sweet 100 x 70 cm.
One last tip
Place the bed in a quiet spot, away from drafts and the front door, and if possible, where the dog can see you. If the bed is new, rubbing it with one of your garments or their usual blanket helps them accept it sooner.
All Gloria beds in the store are shipped from Spain and arrive in 1 to 3 business days. You can view them all together in Gloria beds and sets.
