How to wash your dog's bed without damaging it

A dog bed accumulates hair, dust, and that characteristic smell much sooner than we think. Washing it frequently is good for the dog and the house, but it must be done correctly so it doesn't lose its shape or filling.

1. Before washing: remove the hair

Shake the bed outside and use a vacuum cleaner or a lint roller on it. If you put a hair-covered bed in the washing machine, much of it will get stuck in the drum and on the rest of your clothes.

2. Always check the label

It’s the golden rule. Many beds, such as the Gloria Quartz, can be washed at 30°C, while others, like the Gloria Sweet, have a removable cover so you only have to wash the cover itself.

3. In the washing machine

  • Use the delicate cycle and cold or lukewarm water (30°C maximum, unless the label says otherwise).
  • Use a small amount of mild detergent. Dogs have a very sensitive sense of smell, and strong perfumes bother them.
  • No fabric softener: it leaves residues that can irritate the skin and clump the filling.
  • Low spin cycle to prevent it from losing its shape.

4. Drying

Air drying in the shade, turning it over from time to time, is best. A tumble dryer on high heat can shrink the cover or clump the filling. Make sure it is completely dry before giving it back to the dog: moisture is what causes bad odors.

How often?

As a guideline, a full wash every one or two weeks and a vacuum every few days. If your dog goes out to the countryside a lot or is shedding, do it a little more often.

A tip: have a blanket or a second cover to swap in while the other one is drying. That way, the dog is never without its spot.
